Observations on the pathetic state of American politics

Tea Party candidate: Abolish public schools

I missed this back in August.  Tea Party/GOP candidate for Congress, David Harmer, seeks to eliminate public school: he recommends eduction in America be totally privatized.  I can’t wait to see the Halliburton and Black Water K-12 classrooms. But this nut job is serious.  He claims we’d all be better off if education were taken care of as it was in the early 19th century when, he claims, “literacy levels among all classes, at least outside the South, matched or exceeded those prevailing now.” Typically, no Tea Partier would let treality get in the way of a stupid argument.  Mr. Harmer ignores the fact that most assessements of literacy in early America only counted white males, mostly offspring of well-to-do Puritan families. As recently as 1870, fully 20% of adults in the U.S. couldn’t read at all compared to less than 1% today.
